Local Courts

Family Mediation & the Courts in Manchester

What separating families in Manchester and Greater Manchester need to know about mediation and the court process.

Most Families Never Need to Go to Court

If you can reach agreements in mediation, you avoid contested court proceedings altogether — saving months of delay, significant legal costs, and a great deal of stress for everyone involved, especially your children.

The MIAM Requirement in England & Wales

Before applying to the family court for a child arrangements order (Form C100) or a financial order (Form A), you must first attend a MIAM — unless an exemption applies. Your mediator signs the certificate the court requires. MIAM certificates we issue are valid at every family court in England and Wales, including Manchester Family Court.

Making Your Agreement Legally Binding

An agreement reached in mediation can be drawn up as a Memorandum of Understanding and converted into a consent order by your solicitor — giving it the same legal force as a court order, usually without either of you attending a hearing.

How It Works

The Mediation Process

Most families reach an agreement in 3-5 sessions. Here is what to expect.

1. Free Initial Call (30 minutes)

A confidential chat to understand your situation and explain how mediation works. No obligation.

2. Individual MIAM

A private assessment meeting for each person. Required before court. We discuss your concerns and whether mediation is right for you.

3. Joint Mediation Sessions

Work together with the mediator to find solutions. Sessions are 90 minutes each. Most families need 3-5 sessions.

4. Your Agreement

We document your agreement in a Memorandum of Understanding. Your solicitor can make this legally binding if needed.

FAQs

Family Mediation in Manchester — Common Questions

Do you offer in-person mediation in Manchester?

Yes. In-person MIAMs and mediation sessions are available across Greater Manchester by prior arrangement — many local families choose this. Online sessions via Zoom are equally available if you prefer, and carry exactly the same legal weight.

My ex-partner lives in a different part of Greater Manchester. Can we still mediate?

Yes — this is one of the most common situations we help with. Each of you joins from your own home, which removes the awkwardness of travelling to the same place. Shuttle mediation is also available if you prefer not to be in the same session.

How quickly can we start?

Book a free 30-minute call at a time that suits you. Your individual MIAM usually follows within about a week, and joint sessions can be scheduled soon after — most families reach agreement within 3 to 5 sessions.
